What's this about Bejing? Is that where the next summer olympics will be? I find it funny that they'd be planning allready... (sorry if I sound stupid, I'm a bit clueless here)

So I guess you didn't see the closing ceremonies, at least not near the end. Olympic sites are generally chosen 7 years in advance. At all Olympic closing ceremonies, an Olympic flag is passed from the representative of the city that just had the Olympics to a representative of the city that will have the next Olympics of that type. (summer to summer or winter to winter) Then there is a presentation from the next city to get people interested in it. China has wanted the games so much (unfortunately, for political reasons) that their venues are almost complete already.

NYC is in the running for 2012 Olympics

seriously, it takes a long long time to get ready - especially if you have to build or renovate stadiums along with other logistics of people movement, security, etc.

actually the chinese are moving so fast that they can get all of their stadiums ready by the end of 2006. That is 2 years before the games. But in Athens 6 months before the games, they did not know yet if it would be ready by august.
I think this gives an image of how powerfull China can become, maybe to powerfull?

London is also vying for the 2012 Olympics. I really support that idea. It's way overdue for London to host an Olympics.

London hosted in 1908 and 1948, but never has a city from South American hosted

Mexico city has hosted the games once but that's more central America.
