last thursday i turned 15 1/2 so im old enough to get my learners permit and i can legally drive(with a parent) im getting my permit on saturday and soon i can drive for the first time a few of my friends have theirs but not many but what really makes me mad is there was a driving school around the corner from my house for the last probably 20 or 30 years and then about 5 months ago it closes so now i have to go like half an hour away for driving school im really not that nervous about driving but my parents are( when i went disney world 3 years ago i rented one of those little motor boats and my dad rode along he was scared out of his mind i was doin donuts and 180s and playin chicken with other boats(but ill be much more careful in a car) i really cant wait!
Wow... first let me say congratulations... but I'll have to also say, IMO, driving isn't all it's cracked up to be. I got my permit, drove a little bit (of course, I had to learn on a stick shift in hilly Califonia...), then wasn't very motivated (I had a hard time for over a year), so I pretty much tried everything I could to get out of practicing... but then (on my second permit - the first had expired after a year) I realized I really needed to get my liscence... err... my parents made me... and I got it on the second time I took the test, over winter break... so I am a relatively newly liscenced driver... but I really don't use it... I don't even have a car! But definitely be careful with it! Today in Spanish class (for some odd reason, before class started) we were talking about car crashes people knew of that killed people from their high schools... it's more common than you might think... just keep in mind those words from the movie Spiderman - "with great power comes great responsibility"
Like SL, I never learned until this past summer at the ripe young age of 20 yrs. I never needed it but had to get it. I still don't have a car and barely drive. Driving is something that is a responsibility and while it can be fun it needs to be taken seriously at all times. And Okapi, if driving school is rough don't worry. I had a tough time. I once turned too hard and sent the my instructor's front right tire into the curb and caused a flat . Not the best lesson at all. Luckily I was just turning out of my street and no one else was anywhere nearby. But I perservered and got my license. Good luck and enjoy the freedom of driving but remember the responsibility.

if you can learn on a manual transmission, do so!
you never know when you might need that skill and to try later is so much harder.
atuomatics are great and all, and you may never end up driving a stick again, but the knowledge is invaluable!
jwa's right you know
although you have to be 18 to legally drive in Belgium, my dad is learning me how to drive and with manual transmission it's really hard

I could NOT WAIT until I turned 15 to get that permit! And then it was really bad when I turned 16 because my birthday was on a Saturday the department of motor vehicles was closed....had to wait ALL THE WAY until MONDAY to get my license! But I loved driving the moment I was able to. I find it very relaxing (for the most part, but not when some jerks are out on the roads). I hope you enjoy your time learning and when you do get that license I'm sure you'll be very proud of yourself.
I hate stick shifts.....I don't think they're good for city driving because you always have to shift! And here in Nebraska where we tend to get a lot of snow, it was tough for me to manuver the one I had. I only kept it for a year after I bought it. I'm an automatic person.
i want to learn on a manual but both my parents drive automatics and i want to get a truck a couple of my friends that are younger than me alredy have cars!
and i will be really careful a kid i knew from another school died about a month ago when his brother was driving and the car slid on some ice my mom was really having second thoughts about letting me get my license
I think most parents have those kinds of concerns. But with lots of practice and with them in the car with you for the next few months, hopefully they will overcome their fears and trust you. Good luck and have fun!

Good luck with your driving. Some advice if you have a chance to learn on a stick shift first do soo! I've had my license for a few years now and I dirve an automatic. I wish I would have learned on a stick shift. Now when I try to drive one its like learning to drive all over again. Not so fun. Once I turned 16 I went out and got my permit and have been driving ever since. I didnt get my own car until I was 18 but once you move out and go away to college. Its nice to have your own car unless your in a city with good public transportaion like New York or Toronto. Here in Atlanta the buses come every 20 mins plus theirs no subway or express bus into the city. Pretty cruddy public transportaion. So always good to know how to drive.
where i live there is no public transportation at all (except for school and that really dpesnt count) but i can ride all the way across town in under an hour on my bike
My dad and my sister are going to teach me to drive later this year.I'll be 16 at the end of march, and i'll probably use my mom's car for a while(I was going to learn with my dad's truck, but he gave it to my brother). My nephews and niece say they're going to stay away from the road when i get my permit
