Welcome back Capt.! Glad you enjoyed your time in America. Jetlag is a killer but just rest and you should be fine ;)

Welcome back, Capt.!

It can take up to a week to recover fully from jet lag between Europe and the Americas. When you are fully recovered, I would love to hear about everything you saw and your impressions, especially since I have not been to NY or DC in a long time.

I had a good night sleep and right now I feel alright, so I'll tell you some more about my trip.

On march 28 the whole bunch of us gathered at the railwaystation here, in Bruges. From there we took the train to Brussels International Airport and set off to NY's JFK airport (after passing trough security over and over).

We arrived at 3 pm eastern time. From JFK we took the metro to Amsterdam Avenue (Uptown) where our hostel was situated. Normally we would have visited Central Park and Time Square by night, this fell trought due to have rainfall. So a bunch of us decided to defy the rain and go to a gospel service. When we arrived it turned out to be no service

The second day we took the metro to Brooklyn heights to admire the skykline. Afterwards we walked to and across Brooklyn Bridge. We walked trough the financial district and passed trinity church as we headed towards ground zero. Then we ate lunch at battery park and took the ferry to Staten Island and back to manhatten. We passed the statue of liberty. At 3.30pm we visited the Native American museum. Afterward we went back to the hostel, found something to eat and gathered again at 8.30pm to visit Central Park & Times Square by night.

On day 3 we visited the Brooklyn Museum (nice egyptian collection) and the Guggenheim museum, wich was kind of a bummer. There was a very large piece of art placed in the main hall wich ment that there was no more room for paintings or other things inside the spiral. We walked down 5th avenue, took a look at schwarz and visited the Empire State at 7 pm. The Empire State building was awesome but the organisation at total disaster. We had to wait for 2 hours and never ending queing lines.

Day 4 was museum day. In the morning we visited the Metropalitan museum. It was one of the best museums I've ever seen although you looted Europe and Africa to fill it ;) (I don't mind). I was really impressed of all those priceless object from the tempel of Khandur to the painting of Rubens or Monet. In the afternoon we visited that other great museum called Museum of Modern Art.

The fifth day we took some vans and left NY, only to drive south and entering Washington DC. On the way down we drove trough the Amish area and visited Amish village.

The sixth day we visited Air & Space museum and the holocaust museum wich was really impressive. Afterwards we walked trough the mall and passed the Vietnam, Korea & Lincoln memorial. We ended our day with lunch in Georgetown.

The seventh day was our last day in Washington. I decided to go to the new museum of the American Indian and then to National Galleries. Both museums were very beautifull. In the evening we drove back to NY.

The last day we passed through Chinatown and went shopping in Canal St and Fifth avenue. Our plane took off at 8 pm and yesterday I arrived at 9 am (local Belgian time) in Belgium

Impressions:

NY: It's a beautifull city but I've seen a lot of poverty to, plus I think they should consider to restore the metro. In fact a lot of streets and footsteps need restorarion. I never felt unsafe but then we never entered the dangerous area's. Also we were very surprised to hear from youth that they went to school armed .
Washington: although a very beautifull and clean city (cleaner than NY), we thought it was a boring city to live in.
Food: We were very surprised to see that the food was really cheap. We liked a lot, most of the times we were amazed by the size of the portions or slice we got. But we missed some healthy alternatives to fast food.
