View Order And Footprints Guide

Post by Jay »

When loading the 4 images of an object into APE or ZOOT, it is sometimes confusing which image should be in which view and which direction is the "X" direction versus which direction is the "Y" direction. To make things clearer, here is an image showing the 4 views of a building, along with which sides are cFootprintX and cFootprintY.

Image

The first view is the SE image because that is the default view that Zoo Tycoon shows before the menu or zoo are rotated. It is the SE image that should have a door or opening for buildings and stands. The remaining views are in the order used when rotating clockwise in Zoo Tycoon. Sometimes people get confused on the order of the back images. One way to tell the difference is by looking at the cFootprintX and cFootprintY lengths in the views. Another way, especially for square buildings, is to look at the roof angles in the views.

If one is using ZOOT to adjust the rotation positions, it is often confusing what footprint settings to use in ZOOT because ZOOT does not use cFootprintX and cFootprintY directly, like MAKHOR does. In ZOOT 1.0 and earlier, the footprint settings for 2 of the views are the same as cFootprintX and cFootprintY, but they are reversed in the other 2 views. The ZOOT footprint settings are shown in the above image below each view for ZOOT 1.0 and earlier. As can be seen, SE and NW have the same ZOOT footprint, and SW and NE have the same ZOOT footprint. As of ZOOT 1.1, however, you would use the same footprint as the SE view for all 4 views. So in ZOOT 1.1 and later, a ZOOT footprint of 6x4 would be used for all 4 views of the above building.

In the above image, cFootprintX is longer than cFootprintY. But that is not true for all objects. Here is the SE view of the ingame bighorn statue, which shows that cFootprintY is longer than cFootprintX.

The Characteristics Guide gives more about the footprints.
