Microsoft has reserved the string IDs 8300-8999 for user made downloads. I am starting this topic so we can keep track of the ID's used in downloads, and minimize double use, so members can enjoy all downloads.

I have noticed that there are many jumps and switches built into ZT for the usage of the various strings. Therefore, the ID’s referenced in the original objects are not necessarily the ones displayed in the game: there can be jumps of 200, 10,000, 30,000, or 55,000 in ID number.

In the past, the strings used for cNameID, cHelpID, and cUsedThought have been picked very close together.

Bigcatkeeper and myself have identified some of the programming in ZT regarding the use of strings, that suggest the old method does not make use of all the features of the ZT programming and is a rather inefficient use of string IDs. Thanks to Bigcatkeeper for writing the following text for the members with limited programming experience.

ZT contains several automatic jumps that we should exploit, we have not done so yet. If everyone did this for user created buildings from now on we shall be saving a lot of strings, this may sound complicated but please follow!

From now on, please use the strings and programming as follows (8000 is an example you would replace it with your string):

cNameID=8000
(In your dll file create the string 8000 as your buildings name)

cHelpID=8000
(In your dll file create the string 38000 as your buildings tooltip/help ID, what you must do to work out the string is add 30000 to what ever string ID you have, as long as it is not out of range. So 8000 + 30000 = 38000)

63,000
insert the text "the xxxx" in this string
Jay suggested that the string 63,000 is used by the zookeeper for his recommendations "animal x does not like the xxxxx"
I tested it and have to report that Jay correctly made this suggestion
This string ID is not programmed in the .ai file, but automatically assigned by ZT.

cUsedThought=
In ZT, guest thoughts are defined in a rather small range. We can work around the automatic jumps in ZT by 'blocking' the guest thoughts. In this example, we could define the guest thought in string 8001. This would also allow for guest thoughts in strings 38001 and 63,001 that can be used for other buildings.
We still need to test this, but I think that this should work since no physical object or animal is defined in these strings.

THE NEXT PART IS FOR THE ITEMS NAME AND CONSUMED THOUGHTS
For any items name you will need a new string ID so lets use 8002 as an example!
In your (itemsname).cfg file do as followed:

nameID=8002
(In your dll file create the string 8002 as your items name)

38002
Place the tooltip text here

consumedThoughtID=63002
(In your dll file create the string 63002, to work out your string ID add 55000 to your string ID as long as it is not out of range. So 8002 + 55000 = 63002). This was used for the "the buildingname" string,
this string seems to have no apparent use in ZT, and we can use it for guest thoughts.

There may be more efficient ways to use strings for items, but we need to experiment with them to make sure that they are indeed working.

We know this sounds complicated but we are running out of string IDs fast and this will give us the opportunity to keep them going!

Edit by Jay: The "items" example had some numbers ending with 1 and some with 2. I believe the intent was to end things with 2 instead of 1, so I changed those. Also, remember everyone. These numbers are just examples. Don't use these specific numbers. We don't want to replace Zoo Tycoon's Elephant Ride, Carousel, or Playground. Right?

Thanks, casey, for the information, as well as for maintaining the list for such a long time. I'm glad you are sharing the information at the new ZKL site as you did at the old. Since the information is extremely useful to help avoid conflicts, I pinned the topic. In order to keep it a little more visible and a little more accessible to creators, I will try to keep it in the main APE Questions section instead of inside the UCA Editing and Tutorials section.

Others might know that casey has been maintaining this list at Zoo Admin. These string ids are used for buildings, fences, guest thoughts, scenarios, etc.. They are not the 8 character ids used for animals and scenery.

I encourage any creator that needs string ids for their projects to post the ids they will use either at Zoo Admin or here. It is important that there be coordination for using ids. It is extremely easy to accidentally pick string ids that have been used already by someone else. This has happened in the past. The reason the list is at more than one site is because we want to make sure there are multiple ways to get to the list. There are so many great creators at so many sites, the more ways they have to get to the list, the better for everyone.

casey and I will try to keep the lists in sync between the two sites. Any other site, please feel free to keep any similar list in sync as well. Anyone else that also notices discrepancies in the lists, please feel free to post. The greater the cooperation, the less chance there will be conflicts between downloads. And that benefits everyone!

I would like to reserve 1600-1800 for my personal UXP.
I know it seems a lot, but it will also include updates of my previous stuff, so the following strings would become usable again:

Even if things are updated, we would not want to reuse 8500, 8506, 8676-8692, 8697-8726, 8728-8729, 8732-8757 for other things. Others may have those downloads already. Zoos may have been created using them. Combined ".dll" files contain some of those messages. And, since everyone is encouraged to reuse the same messages for new creations in order to not use up the ids too fast, we do not know if any of those messages are used in other things.

In order to be safe, we might not want to reuse any numbers associated with a download name.

But thanks for letting everyone know that the other numbers can be reused. Good luck with your project!

I have a question,
I would like to reserve some string ID's for my Super Savannah pack but how do I know which strings are still available? do I have to read the whole list to see which aren't used?

Yes, you would have to look at the list. We are working backwards through the available ids. We also reserve in blocks of 16. So the next available block is 7616-7631, 37616-37631, 62616-62631. But you should not reserve a block until you have everything else done except setting the ids.

I do need Id numbers at least 50 and I would like to know how you know what to use from the list and what numbers MS is using
I don´t mind jumping in numbers so we can maybe get them in better order
