I believe that gives a 4th letter that must definitely be in the answer.

Both octopus and lamprey have 4 letters that match. If none of those letters are the same, that would make 8 different letters. But the answer has only 7 letters. So that means at least 1 matching letter in those words is the same. As it turns out, there is only 1 letter that is in both words.

octopus has 2 more matching letters than opposum. That means that there are at least 2 matching letters that are in octopus that are not in opposum. As it turns out, there are only 2 letters in octopus that are not in opposum.

You should now know all of the letters. By looking at octopus and lamprey, you should know which letter in tadpole is not in the answer. By looking at octopus and opposum, as mentioned before, you should know which letter should be instead. Then it is just a matter of figuring out the order of the letters.
