anaconda: 1 letter matches (0 in the right place)
mangabey: 1 letter matches (1 in the right place)
sokosoko: 1 letter matches (0 in the right place)
urumutum: 1 letter matches (0 in the right place)
pipefish: 3 letters match (2 in the right place)
rifleman: 3 letters match (2 in the right place)

I guess after 10 guesses I can give a hint. Its a north american water dweller.

This one is difficult. I must have made a mistake trying to use just logic instead of words, because even that said nothing could fit. But at least I found a word that will tell me 4 letters that are not in the answer.

That, along with the toadfish clue, tells me that the answer does not have d, f, h, or o. This next animal word will tell me whether or not the answer has a t:

Since the matches increased by 1, that tells me the word has an e. So I know so far that the answer has an e and does not have d, f, h, o, or t. Now to find out if it has an a, which I don't believe it does, with this animal species:

Actually, my last guess was unnecessary. Once we knew that e was in the word, that meant all other letters in mangabey are not in the word, including the a. And once we know that, we also know from anaconda that the c is in the word. So I know so far that the answer has a c and e, and does not have a, b, d, f, g, h, m, n, o, t, or y. I know the word has an i or s, but I am not sure which one. So I will find out which one with this animal species:

That tells me r is in the answer. Working through all of the clues, all 8 letters are now known and it is also known the place of 6 of those letters. Doing internet searches on both possibilities of the k and w do not give any results except for a family name. So I will pick that one:
