I like designs 4 and 5. Although I like bison more than pheasants, design 5 with the pheasant is probably a better choice. It would get some people to ask questions (What is that bird? Why is it on the quarter?) that could promote learning more about South Dakota. But it would be nicer if the Mt. Rushmore portion was more realistic. The design 4 Mt. Rushmore looks more realistic. Or maybe design 5 is how Mt. Rushmore looks if one was in a helicopter. There is a photograph of Mt. Rushmore on this web page: http://www.travelsd.com/parks/rushmore/index.asp
I tremendously like Wind Cave National Park. It is the only cave where I was disoriented. All of the rooms look so much alike that I could go in circles without realizing it. I did go in circles, but that was intentional by the guide. Speaking of the guide... She was the nicest South Dakota resident I ever met. I was visiting the day before Thanksgiving. She agreed to let all of the other workers get an early start for the holidays. So she was all alone taking care of the visitor center, the book/gift shop, and the tours. On the tour I went on, there were 4 people plus her. You would think they would cancel tours for so few people. But she just locked up everything and led us in.
There are supposedly bison on the land of the National Park as well as in the adjacent state park. But I did not see any. Apparently they are shy and usually stay far away from the roads.
I think it is interesting that there is another bison nickel. I am old enough to remember when the old buffalo nickels were in circulation. (They were last made in 1938, but they were still in circulation for a long time after that.) I think most people wish that design stayed. But, back then, a nickel could actually buy worthwhile things and there were a lot of counterfeits. Hence, the design change.
